Introduction / Why roots matter

You have access
to almost everything.

But access is not the same as belonging, understanding or knowing what to do when the screen goes dark.

You can reach people anywhere, search almost any question and carry more information than previous generations could imagine. You can also finish a day connected to hundreds of people while feeling that nobody knows how you are actually doing.

This guide is not a promise to optimise your life. It will not offer seven easy steps to success, happiness or permanent calm. It is a set of invitations to build foundations that a feed cannot provide for you.

Roots are not about becoming self-sufficient at everything. They are the practices, relationships, knowledge and convictions that help you remain a person when platforms change, plans fail and attention is expensive.

The eight essentials overlap. Silence makes attention possible. A cared-for body supports learning. Skills create options. Digital self-defence protects privacy and focus. Community gives support. Knowledge travels with you. Nature widens attention. Convictions help you decide what matters.

A starting question

Which foundation feels strongest in your life? Which one needs attention first? You do not need a perfect score. You need an honest place to begin.

Build roots before
the weather changes.

Use the guide slowly. Try the practical exercises. Keep what helps, adapt what does not fit your life and ask for support where the challenge is bigger than a chapter can hold.

How to use this guide

Read. Try. Revisit.

Read slowly

One chapter at a time is enough. The guide is not a race and your worth is not measured by completion speed.

Try one thing

Each chapter ends with practical options. Choose a version that fits your safety, access, energy and circumstances.

Talk with someone

Use the questions with a mate, group, mentor, teacher or trusted adult. Passing is always allowed.

Watch

Listen, or watch,
or both.

Offline / Take it with you

The whole guide,
with nothing to load.

The entire guide in one download: every chapter, every illustration and all the narration audio. It runs with no internet connection at all, which is what you want on a long trip, in a dead spot, or at the end of the month when the data has run out.

About 67 MB. Unzip it, keep the folder together, and open index.html in any web browser.

It includes all eight essentials, the introduction, the activities, the discussion questions, the reading list and the editorial changelog, along with every infographic and the complete narration set.

Keep the folder together. The pages look for the images and audio beside them, so a single page copied on its own will arrive without its pictures or its sound.

Free, like everything else here. Nothing to sign up for.
